Criminalization of people with HIV was a key theme at the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) taking place this week in Washington, DC.

A recently released report from the Global Commission on HIV and the Law found that human rights abuses and bad laws -- including laws that criminalize HIV transmission, drug use, and sex work, as well as policies that perpetuate inequality and violence against women and girls, gay men, and transgender people -- hinder effective response to the worldwide epidemic.
