U.S. Conference on AIDS Underway this Week in Las Vegas

The U.S. Conference on AIDS (USCA), one of the major meetings focused on the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States, is taking place this week in Las Vegas. Among the major themes are advances in HIV prevention, disparities in HIV epidemiology and access to care, implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and how healthcare reform will affect people with HIV. Thursday is the fifth annual observance of National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD), an opportunity to raise awareness about the epidemic among men who have sex with men. Young gay and bisexual men -- especially African Americans -- are the only population whose HIV incidence rate continues to rise.
According to the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), which started NGMHAAD in 2008, some 720,000 American men who have sex with men (MSM) -- or nearly 1 in 8 -- are now living with HIV, and at least a quarter-million more have died over the 31 years of the epidemic.

HIV incidence remained stable in the U.S. at around 50,000 new cases between 2006 and 2009, according to a report in the August 3, 2011, online edition of PLoS ONE. But the overall numbers hide some major disparities. People of color and men who have sex with men continue to be most heavily impacted, with incidence among young black gay men rising by nearly 50%.

Three new surveys are seeking participation, one looking at sexual risk behavior among gay and bisexual men, the second evaluating gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) and HIV positive people's interactions with police, courts, and prisons, and the third assessing harm reduction practices among non-injecting drug users.

The effectiveness of biomedical approaches to prevent HIV infection was a key theme of the 6th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011), held July 17-20, 2011, in Rome.
Among the major studies presented, Robert Grant from the Gladstone Institute of the University of California at San Francisco described final data from the iPrEx trial, which showed that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using tenofovir/emtricitabine (Truvada) reduced new HIV infections by 42% overall, and by more than 90% among people who demonstrated good adherence.
